Take This Job and Shovel It

In an effort to make this here corner of the interwebs a less depressing place I’ve decided to begin participating in the Daily Prompt again. As often as I can, anyhow. They sometimes have some very interesting prompts. Other times it’s, “Why would anyone want to write about that?”

Today, the DP wants to know if I’d keep working if I had bottomless pit full of money. Specifically, they asked:

If money were out of the equation, would you still work? If yes, why, and how much? If not, what would you do with your free time?

Would I still work if I didn’t need the money? Allow me to answer that with some imagery.

Why the hell would I work if I DIDN’T need the money? Hell no I wouldn’t work. I HATE having an alarm clock wake me in the morning. I hate my morning commute. My coworkers drive me fucking insane. The account I’m on is so mismanaged that even Snooki would be scratching her head and asking, “Hey, what the hell are you guys doing over there?”

So what would I do with my free time? I’d sleep in. I’d exercise. I’d write. I’d spend more time with my children, niece, and nephews. I’d play video games. I may even do some cleaning around the house. I’d visit far away friends and family. I’D POTTY TRAIN BABY C!

baby c playing with trains
No thanks, Dad. I’m kinda likin’ this whole diaper thing.

I work because I have to. The strain and drain of the rat race annoys me. Life shouldn’t be centered around our work and careers. It should be centered around our families, friends, and happy memories. Life is meant to be lived, and I don’t feel alive while I’m working.

*Bonus points if you can tell me what movie the title of this post came from.

  1. Yup. People with sense get it. Others don’t. I once read an article about this very thing that made the opposite point, and I get it. Some people work because that’s their only time to get out of the house, their coworkers are their only friends. Hell, I’m that way too. And I understand that if they want to keep working for those reasons, that makes sense. But fuck them and fuck that, I ain’t working.

Also, I don’t know what movie that’s from, but it sounds familiar so I think I do know, I just don’t know, ya know?

  2. Oh HELL no…if I didn’t have to work, I wouldn’t work. I hate it for all the same reasons you do. It’s frustrating and I’m forced to spend most of my waking hours with people I cannot stand. And I HAVE TO BE NICE TO THEM. shudder.

      1. not only lazy and stupid ..they don’t work but take credit…make you follow the rules while breaking themselves..not supportive…the list goes on and on…

but would you really follow what you said will do if der is no need for money…I doubt that about myself…I became lazy when I had a break for almost 7-8 months… 😀

so no need to care for money would be good but provided if you really have some good alternative activities in mind..

        1. Oh, I’m sure I would become somewhat lazy, but eventually I’d get tired of being lazy because I’m somewhat ADD and get burned out on things quickly.

or maybe we should go back to barter system..that would solve a lot of problems..

  3. I would work – but I’d be doing something different than what I’m currently doing, if money was no object.
I fantasize about owning an art gallery (no money in that) and would love to make my passion for interior design into paying work – but I know that would be a less lucrative endeavor too. So…money keeps me hooked to my current line of work.

          1. The 2.5 year hiatus after my golden parachute/package from the software behemoth helped me restore much of my lost soul. These past 8.5 months (since going back to work) have been much better for two reasons: 1) I WFH 100% of the time (home being Toronto or Las Vegas – at my discretion); and 2) smaller company = way less politics and knife-in-the-back antics.

It’s still not work I wake up in the morning and go, “HELL YEAH! Can’t wait to get started!”, but the money is great and the work environment is more than I could have hoped for (at home/in PJs most of the time). I’ll take it.

          2. Yep, the truth is that most jobs can be done from anywhere – with today’s technology. It’s a shame more companies aren’t more progressive. I think the worry is that the employee will screw the pooch all day – but even that is BS. The true measure of productivity should be Is shit getting done? Not, is the person at their desk?

          3. Exactly. And frankly, I surf the internet more at work than I do at home. Oh, well. At least it’s a mostly laid back atmosphere here. I can’t work in jammies, but I can wear jeans and a t-shirt at least.

          4. It was less about what I had to wear to work and more about the assholes I was forced to interact with.
(Right now, I’m the only asshole I need to be around 🙂

          5. Well, I’ve learned to tolerate the assholes here. I ignore them mostly, and crank up my music if I can’t.

  4. NO WAY would I work. My husband lost his job earlier this year and that makes my job even more difficult. The fact that I know that I can’t tell anyone to take this job and shove it makes me feel a little cagey. Plus, knowing that he’s still in bed after I’ve already put in 2-3 hours can be envy-enducing! Here’s the funny thing…I have great co-workers and a job that I kind of even like some days. Given the choice, I’d still pick time with the family over the rat race.

      1. Absolutely at the Mecca, it’s the only ting I know. Why throw away 16 years and the grandfathered benefits I have just because I hit it rich? Heck, I’m only 4 away from the lifetime discount card… I’ll take 10% off those Depends, ya whippersnapper!

  5. I am in a distinct minority, I think. I buy lottery tickets, but worry that my husband will want me to quit when we win. I have interesting work, colleagues I like, a boss who is terrific, flexibility and interesting clients. And the company just moved me into a wonderful corner office overlooking some pretty trees (not all of DC, but no longer a brick wall). I have no complaints.

I am damn lucky, which I realize!

  7. Is it that movie about the serial killer who ‘trains’ a guy who wants to kill too? Wild guess.

Sad thing that you have to work just for the money, but yeah, I guess that’s how life works. If I wouldn’t have to work (I’m not even working, let’s not forget that) I would help on some kind of performance thing. I really like to help creating something beautiful. I know I would still love to do that for free.
I already do that with my own dance shows for free sometimes. And I will always love to be a part of such things 🙂

  8. Is the money pit absolutely bottomless? Does it keep coming and coming and coming?

I’d still work. I’d do exactly the job I have now, because I’m not skilled at anything else, and I’d send that money to people who can rescue those orphans from those fucking institutes. I’d pay for their adoptions to gorgeous families in the US.

I’d fill the food-banks of the nation. I’d create some kind of fund so social workers get an increase in wages and resources so they can actually DO THEIR JOBS.

I’d get kids off the streets. I’d build youth centres and communes and places where people can go and live together and be FOR one another.

I’d make sure that cancer research and basic scientific research was adequately funded so that we can BEAT FUCKING CANCER and be prepared for the future of whatever.

I’d donate every last bit and ensure that NONE of it lined the politician’s pockets. Because THEY DON’T DESERVE IT! But also nor do I.

      1. I’m realistic. I have nothing to offer the people who really need help. I don’t have the skills or know-how. But if I had the money, then I would offer that, and hope to do some good.

        That’s all.

  9. Well, I do not earn a wage from my work as a homemaker, but I do work at home. :). I definitely don’t miss my banking career, “I wish I was still working in a bank”, says no one ever. LOL. Potty training is a more important job to have anyway.

  11. As much as I love my job, no, I wouldn’t keep it on. There are too many other things I’d love to do if I had the time and the resources. Right now, ready to head off to work (once I get out of bed!) I can think of nothing better than living by the sea and mountains, supping coffee at my leisure in the early morning (I think I’d still get up early but without the enemy alarm). I’d hire a cleaner and maybe a cook, let them to buzz around while I go for a stroll on the beach regardless of weather. Cobwebs blown off, I’d sit down to write.
With a clean house and meals ready I’d have lots of leisure time with my family and we’d take trips to visit places we’ve never seen. I’d learn some more languages but just to get by in all these amazing places.
I’d make sure my family and friends were sorted financially so they didn’t have to worry about mortgages and debt and crap. I’d enjoy giving away money wherever I saw need in my day to day ( I loved Brewster’s Millions!).
Feck, TD, I’m gonna be late for work!

  12. Technically I don’t work. However if money were no object, I’d get the new priory built so that we have all the floors on one level, donate heaps to charities here in the UK and also for the work of OHP in Ghana. Nuns don’t retire, but they do need to be looked after as they age!
