This has been a fairly uneventful week, really. Full of work, rain, and, um, kid stuff. Anyhow, it’s going to take some effort to get to 10, methinks. Here we go!!
One of the best things about being Baby C’s father are the small memories we make on a daily basis. For instance, on Thursday I let him play Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga on our Xbox because he had gone all day at my mom’s house without having an accident. He wanted to play a forest level, so I loaded the Battle of Endor. We got to a part where we needed to take a lift down from the Ewoks’ home in the top of the trees to the forest floor below. Instead of taking the left, Baby C kept repeatedly throwing R2 of off the platform because he found R2’s dying scream hilarious. It was incredibly cute to watch, but I’m not sure if I should be concerned that repeatedly killing R2 is funny to him.
Then there are tiny magical moments like now, when I glance over toward Baby C, who was sitting on the couch eating an apple and watching Elmo’s World, and finding that he’s passed out, apple slice in hand. That child is immeasurably cute, but his cuteness factor intensifies a thousand-fold when he’s asleep.
I set a goal this year to raise $100 for the AFSP Out of the Darkness walk this year based on the amount of money I raised last year. I’ve been blown away this year and have already raised $210, and there’s still a month and a half to go until the walk. I’m so very thankful to everyone who’s donated and completely overwhelmed by all of your support. You guys fucking rock.
You know that moment when you like a song, but when you actually stop to listen to the lyrics you find out that those lyrics are speaking what’s in your heart and you fall instantly in love with that song and play it on repeat until even your three-year old is like, “WTF, dad?” Yeah, that.
I can’t even adequately articulate how much I can relate to this song. It speaks to me like an enchanted voice from heaven above. Or something. Seriously, though, I am in love with this song right now.
I know I’m late to the party, but I just signed up for Spotify the other day. I’d been using Pandora for the last few years (which is great for finding new music), but Spotify does what Pandora does and more. Spotify is amazing and I’m now unsure how I survived without it.
They tried to lose me right away, though. I got an email from them encouraging me to find my favorite artists. In the email were links to Katy Perry, Justin Bieber, One Direction, and Miley Cyrus. Spotify, I know we just met, but what the FUCK makes you think I’d enjoy any of that music based on the things I’ve listened to so far (all hard rock)? It’s like you’re trying to insult me before you’ve even gotten to know me.
The cool autumn weather has finally arrived. I’ve had all the windows in the house open the last couple of days. I LOVE IT!
I made a lot of progress in what I’m hoping will turn out to be a novel last weekend. I have five chapters uploaded and saved as drafts, and I’ll probably begin releasing a chapter weekly once I feel I’m far enough ahead to keep writing AND post chapters regularly.
Still haven’t had any alcohol! Going on a month now.
What if I told you there was a magical beverage you could consume when you’re tired and absolutely hate the world that would flip everything upside down? A non-alcoholic beverage, no less. It makes people less irritating. It makes the annoying chirping of the birds slightly more tolerable. It gets your juices flowing and gives you energy. I’m speaking, of course, of coffee. Lord knows I’d have been fired long ago without that magical beverage. (Yeah, I’m leaving this one here from last week because coffeh.)
Football is back! There’s nothing better than sinking into the couch on a Sunday afternoon to watch 300lb behemoths in skin-tight clothes beat the shit out of each other while play-by-play announcers spew inanity from their mouths while occasionally being interrupted by 30-second snippets of stupidity in the guise of trying to get us to spend money we don’t have on shit that doesn’t matter.
Man, I love football.
I’ve been reluctant to talk about it for fear of becoming derailed and jinxing myself, but in the last few months I’ve seriously reduced my daily caloric intake. In conjunction with eliminating alcohol from my diet and slowly introducing some light exercise into my daily routine, I’ve dropped almost 20lbs since June. I’ve been able to successfully lose weight in the past, but at some point I always lose my motivation…and then I find the weight again. Maybe this time I’ll get it right? Who knows? But here’s hoping.
I like your list, by the way…let me preface. Also, let me state that Ive had a bottle of red blend and, well…I’m only partially responsible if I say anything “off kilter”, k?
Spotify Rocks.
C is cool as shit and yes, he is cute as all get out!
Rock is ok, but not my favorite. Your taste in music works well for you,but I’m quick to turn that on Octane when it comes on. I WANT INTERPOL!
Coffee is fantastic. Heavens nectar, if you will. I have a renewed love for decaf (after 6pm).
As far as your separation from booze…YAY! I think that’s a very strong decision. It’s even better that you’re strong enough to be without. What a great way to prove to yourself that you really ARE the shit, S.

Octane? Never heard of them.
I had to separate from booze. When I started spending money I didn’t really have to get it I knew it was time to go.

Octane is a channel on Sirius/XM. It’s a “rock” channel. Right up your alley. 🙂
As far as spending money on alcohol is concerned, I believe you made the right decision. So many do not recognize that bump in the road as a sign that something needs to change. It’s great that you’re away of your own boundaries. Many are incapable…or choose not to.

Boundaries is something I’ve focused on in the last year or so. I guess it’s working.

Lapses in judgement?
Hell yes! We all fall on our faces. Sometimes,it feels like every day for a while. But, we get back up and hit the snooze for ten more minutes….every day. It’s just what we do.
In that routine, it’s our job to learn from our mistakes and the things that “don’t work”. It’s our job to be aware and not blame everyone else for our failures.
What a word….”failure”. It sounds so harsh.

Well, it can be a harsh word. None of us like to admit we failed.

To be honest, I rarely drank in front of them. Thankfully. It was the days they WEREN’T here when I was drinking. Still, I’m happy with the decision I made. I’m feeling MUCH better physically and mentally since I stopped drinking so often.

Well, I don’t plan on never having a drink again, but it’ll probably be a long time before I do again. It had become too habitual and it may have even been the reason the prozac wasn’t working like it should have been. In fact, I imagine I’ll get a slight tongue lashing from my doc once I can finally get into see him (had to cancel the appt I had today because he was outta the office).

As a person who has been to the hopeless bottom and rose to the top after it, I thank you. Know that so many people who are afraid to reach out, who don’t get respect from society and unfortunately the medical community/services etc…thank you. You’re doing amazing things for so many suffering.
PS. Two words…pumpkin creamer.

I tried the pumpkin spiced creamer last year and it wasn’t good. I don’t know if it was the brand or what. I WILL be making some trips to Starbucks to get some Pumpkin Spiced Lattes, though.

Dude, REALLY well done on the lifestyle change and weight-drop. It’s not easy, I know, and takes concerted bloody effort to make it happen, but isn’t it GREAT to be able to write about such an achievement in such a large number? It’s awesome. You rock, and KEEP GOING!
Same for the novel – to be able to write that you’ve got so much done already is brilliant, and how AWESOME it feels to have those chapters under the belt. I need to try to remember that feeling enough to get my next chapters written.
And the sight of a child who has fallen asleep mid-thing…completely gorgeous and always a moment of sheer delight to behold. Love it 🙂

The weight loss is something I’ve been able to do before, but for one reason or another I let it creep back on. The trick this time is to figure out a way to keep it off.
The novel is likely something I’ll only have time to work on every other weekend (when the kids aren’t here), but I’m hoping to keep that going, too.
And C is amazing, despite the fact that I can hear him throwing a tantrum upstairs right now. Sigh…

Oh bless his boots. And yours. Tantrums are never easy to manage 😦
Every other weekend is still really good. I keep thinking I *should* develop a schedule for myself and MAKE myself write but…my inspiration’s not there for it. So I’m not pushing it, I guess.
Hmm…the not letting it creep back is tricky. I guess keep a lower-calorie maintenance diet, and keep using more energy than you ingest.

For someone who thought a list would be tough this week, you managed very, very well, buddy. There is absolutley no doubt that the small moments are the best and there is nothing more adorable than a sleeping kid. I can only hope that I look as peaceful and content when I am sleeping. I hope you snapped a pic of C apple sleeping!
You know where I stand on the non-drinking. I’m glad for you. It takes balls to admit you see a problem and to do something about it. I like the positive changes in your life you have going on.
I love the song. Coffee is THE best. I like the book cover. Football season ROCKS. And *pfffft* for you cooler weather!
NO……really, I’m happy for your cooler weather. Really.

Good job losing 20 lbs! And not drinking. Your choices are working in your favor! Coffee is pretty good stuff – I drink several cups a day and enjoy every single one. I am cracking up about C repeatedly killing R2D2. Whatever it takes to make a game more fun that it was intended.
